The ultimate 80s underdog story. Lanky Daniel La Russo's the new kid in Reseda and takes an interest in the ex-girlfriend of the local bully. Pretty soon he's tormented by him and his karate-chopping friends. Enter Mr. Miyagi to the rescue. Through extensive training Daniel turns into a martial arts master, taking down the evil Johnny Lawrence and bringing hope to the smaller kids on the playground.
The Karate Kid is a semi-autobiographical story based on screenwriter Robert Kamen's teen years in addition to a news article about a boy who earned a black belt to fight off local bullies. The film was a sleeper hit and became one of the biggest movies of 1984. An increasing interest in karate was seen following the release of The Karate Kid. A sequel was soon greenlit and a franchise ensued. The Netflix series Cobra Kai (2018-) has continued the saga of Daniel and Johnny to much critical acclaim.

I been to the apts they moved into in California. You can go into the apts once somebody opens the gate. The pool looks the same and you can go to their upper corner apt. The side alley. And the empty lot next door was still empty when I went.
ReplyDeleteHi Nevets. I visited the apartment building on my recent trip, but didn't get to go inside. I hope to have pictures up hopefully by tomorrow.
DeleteThe Miyagi home? Where filmed?
ReplyDeleteMr. Miyagi's house was located at 20924 Gault Street in Canoga Park but was sadly demolished a few years after the movie was made.
DeleteI have been going through your site like crazy today. This is one of my favorite films of all time (born 1970). I grew up in Agoura, right near Westlake Plaza (saw Hulk Hogan there checking in during a friend's wedding reception there). Thanks for doing all you do.
ReplyDeleteThanks James! I'm glad you like the site.
DeleteGolf n' Stuff looked awesome. Nighttime water slides? Sad I didn't get a chance to see them in person, as it appears they've been removed.
ReplyDeleteI'm 46 and grew up watching The Karate Kid. I now live across the street from Golf N Stuff for the past 10 years and idk why but I've never stepped foot in Golf N Stuff.
ReplyDeleteWhat? You must go!
