Better Call Saul (2015-2022)

 

Jimmy McGill is a former con artist on a journey to become a lawyer.  After being passed over for a job at his brother Chuck's firm, Jimmy takes on the persona of Saul Goodman, working as a public defender and later delving into elder law.  Throughout this time, Jimmy's relationship with colleague Kim Wexler turns romantic and his involvement with criminals increases, sending him back to his con artist days.  Things come to a head when Jimmy needs to leave Albuquerque and assumes the identity of Gene Takavic, a manager at an Ohama Cinnabon.

A prequel to the ever popular Breaking Bad (2008-2013) was tossed around after its first season, though it would not come to fruition until two years after it went off the air.  The series would be based on events leading up to Breaking Bad, with guest appearances by some of the characters.  Better Call Saul is one of the few spinoffs that has achieved success, such as The Facts of Life (1979-1988) and Melrose Place (19921-1999).  For some odd reason, it was not an Emmy darling that its predecessor was.

Working as an unappreciated high school chemistry teacher diagnosed with stage three lung cancer, Walter White has seen better days.  To make sure his family is set for the future, Walter aligns with former student Jesse Pinkman to cook and sell meth.  Their modest beginnings involve a rolling meth lab but Walter's recipe for special blue meth takes their production facilities to a higher level.  But with success comes problems, including entanglements with cartels, gangs and even his own brother-in-law.

Breaking Bad is considered by many to be one of the best television series of all time.  The writing and acting are superb and the show managed to increase viewership each season, a feat usually unheard of.  The Emmy-favorite had its share of shocking moments throughout its run including the plane crash, Tortuga's tortoise and Gus' explosive ending.  Unlike many shows, Breaking Bad ended before jumping the shark though fans were able to get their fill of the universe with the prequel spin-off Better Call Saul (2015-2022) and the Breaking Bad sequel film El Camino.

As most fans probably know by now, the owner of the house hates visitors.  She was already outside yelling at someone else when I got there.  That, combined with the house covered in Halloween decorations and the sun's glare, didn't make this a great location visit, so I'll need to go back. Hopefully she'll be out at a pizza restaurant next time...
