The Fog (1980)

Ahoy, maties!  It's the 21st of April and the sleepy coastal town of Antonio Bay is preparing for its centennial celebration as a series of mysterious events unfold after an unearthly fog sweeps in.  Turns out the town has a curse on it (don't they all?) Blake and his men seek revenge after their boat was deliberately crashed a hundred years ago to prevent a leper colony being established nearby.  As the evening festivities get underway, the fog rolls in again and begins to wreak havoc.  Stevie Wayne, the town's only disc jockey, uses the power of the airwaves to guide residents to safety.  Blake retrieves his gold and after Father Malone loses his head, it's even stevie's :-)

The Fog is another classic from John Carpenter and one of my top 5 films of all time.  A ghost story that brings Janet Leigh and Jamie Lee Curtis together on screen (although only for a few minutes) with good atmosphere, scenic locations, and an ominous score.  If only we found out why Antonio Bay beats Chicago.

The Fog was filmed in Pt. Reyes Station, Inverness, Bodega Bay, Sierra Madre and Hollywood, CA

I visited these locations in November ’11 and just recently in November of ’15.  I went straight from the airport to get there before they closed the gate to walk down to the lighthouse at 4:30.  I made it with literally five seconds to spare.  If you haven’t been, I highly recommend being there at sunset.  It’s really a spectacular sight to see.

The Sea Grass - well, not really

It was recently pointed out to me that this is not the correct location.  Stinson Beach, which is a bit south of Pt. Reyes Beach, is the actual location with a curvier shoreline.  Since it's a nice view, I'll leave it as a placeholder until I get back to the area.

  1. "Get through the speeches without yawning" is on Sir Francis Drake Blvd (the exact location looks to be at 38.092582, -122.846517)

Bing Street View gives a better comparison as their images are taken from the same side of the road as the film.
