It's the summer of 1984 and while Los Angeles is planning for the Olympics, a group of friends head out of town to be counselors at Camp Redwood. In 1970, a massacre occurred at the camp when the counselors were murdered seemingly by Benjamin Richter, better known as Mr. Jingles. It is revealed the real killer is former counselor Margaret White, now the owner of the camp. Mr. Jingles returns to Camp Redwood after escaping an asylum to seek revenge. Also preying around the camp is The Night Stalker Richard Ramirez.
The body count rises but their ghosts remain on the grounds and counselor Brooke is framed for the murders. As the decade ends, she awaits execution while Margaret plans a musical festival at the camp to make money. It is revealed another massacre occurred back in 1948 by Benjamin's mother after his younger brother was killed. In 2019, Benjamin's son Bobby visits the camp looking for answers as to who has been sending him money. It turns out it was Brooke, who escaped her death. Bobby leaves the camp and has a tearful goodbye with his family.
American Horror Story:1984 is one of my favorite seasons of the franchise. I had high hopes after seeing the teaser trailer. As a lover of slasher films, the influences of Friday the 13th (1980) and Halloween (1978) made the season quite enjoyable. And the setting being Los Angeles in the 1980s was a welcome treat. American Horror Story: 1984 has the best final scene of the franchise. Mike & The Mechanics "The Living Years" adds so much to the moment. The season was well-received by critics and benefited from only having nine episodes instead of the usual twelve or thirteen. Montana's line that the 80s will never die are some of the truest words ever said on television.
