The beautiful art-deco Hotel Cortez is at the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, but inside is a hotel of horrors. It was built in 1930 by serial killer James Patrick March and the gruesome murders haven't stopped since. Among its current eclectic employees and guests are owner Elizabeth Johnson aka The Countess, manager Iris, bartender Liz Taylor and Hypodermic Sally. Detective John Lowe investigates a series of gruesome murders linked to the Ten Commandments and ends up checking in.
American Horror Story: Hotel is loosely based on The Cecil Hotel, a real life Los Angeles hotel known for guests deaths and disappearances and is influenced by such films as The Shining (1980). It took a darker tone than previous seasons and was not as well-received by critics, citing style eclipsing storytelling. And Lady Gaga doesn't fill the void left by Jessica Lagne's exit. Devil's Night is a standout episode, as James Patrick March holds court at a dinner party reuniting serial killers of yesterday.
