Empty Nest started as a backdoor pilot on The Golden Girls (1985-1992) and was perhaps one of the worst episodes of the series. It came as no surprise that it didn't work and had to be extensively retooled. It debuted a year and a half later, in much better shape. The only survivor was David Leisure as the quintessential annoying neighbor. The first four seasons were pretty solid before the endless parade of cast changes.

Unfortunately this big ass tree prevents you from getting a nice wide shot...
Just like the show it was spun off from, a replica of the real house was constructed on the Disney/MGM Hollywood Studios backlot. I swear I have a polaroid shot from the late 80s before the house was remodeled. Unfortunately this is not the best photo. It was taken from the tram ride a few years before it was torn down for a new attraction....

I was always curious where the house was. The address is 1457 Jonesboro Drive, Brentwood, CA. You can see it on Google Maps Street view. Its amazing as it looks the same even 30 years later.
ReplyDeleteI agree that episode within The Golden Girls was horrible! I didn't really like the show after year one, but I loved the house!
