Backstreet Boys - I Want It That Way (1999)

The late 90s saw a youthquake in entertainment.  Scream (1996) and I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) ushered in a new era of teen horror films.  Dawson's Creek (1998-2003) and Buffy The Vampire Slayer ruled on television.  Picking up the mantle from New Edition and New Kids On The Block were NSYNC and Backstreet Boys.  For the lead single off their sophomore album, Backstreet Boys chose the mid-tempo track I Want It That Way.  If you're left confused by the lyrics, you're in good company.  Regardless, the nonsensical song was a hit for the boy band and became one of their most revered songs.

For the equally nonsensical video, the boys are seen taking over the Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX, showing up with no luggage, walking and dancing like they own the place.  I can't begin to fathom how many people were late for their flights.  They are then surrounded by adoring fans in a hangar.  All the chaos could've been avoided had they used The Bob Hope Airport.  But I guess they wanted it that way.

I Want It That Way was filmed in Los Angeles, CA

This area is also seen in Die Hard 2 (1990).

Scream (2022)

The town of Woodsboro has been at peace for some time.  That all ends when Tara Carpenter receives a phone call from a familiar voice.  After being taunted she is attacked by Ghostface but manages to survive.  Her equally uncharismatic sister Sam returns home with her boyfriend Pacey Witter Richie Kirsch and align themselves with Tara's uninteresting and unrealistic group of friends.  Meanwhile Dewey Riley, now divorced from Gale Weathers, is living in a trailer down by the river.  After a visit from Sam, he warns his ex and Sydney Prescott, who's been through it.  A lot.  She returns to Woodsboro after Dewey's death at Haddonfield Memorial Hospital Woodsboro Hospital, teams up with Gale and heads to Stu Macher's house, where another bloodbath takes place.  Richie and Amber are revealed to be the killers with a lame Stab requel motive.

Having not been a fan of Scream 4, I was hesitant about another installment.  But the trailer looked somewhat decent, so off to the theater I went.  Apparently, the filmmakers forgot a Scream movie was supposed to be scary.  I soon became as sleepy as the legacy character performances.  Straight out of the Halloween Kills (2021) playbook, they are not given the proper treatment, and in this case, not given a huge reason to be involved.  And who'd want to be with this new brood of kids?  Aside from the Carpenter House, the Woodsboro of this film is a far cry from the Woodsboro of the original locations-wise.  After performing well at the box office, it was no surprise that a sixth installment would be greenlit, though it was a jump scare when Neve Campbell announced just yesterday she would not be returning.

This was a great location with a very similar feel to Casey Becker's house from the original.  The overbearing trees give a sense of foreboding...

In the original film, Stu's House is located at 3871 Tomales Petaluma Road in Tomales, CA.  For this film, it was recreated on a Screen Gems soundstage in Wilmington.  Production design did a great job replicating it.  Here are some comparison shots from my 2018 visit...
