You’re Next (2013)

The wealthy but estranged Davison family reunites at their vacation home in the country to celebrate mom and dad's anniversary.  During what turns out to be their last supper, they find themselves under attack by crossbow and machete-wielding assailants donning tiger, fox and lamb masks.  Much to their chagrin, Crispian Davison's girlfriend Erin grew up on a survivalist's compound and can kick ass like no other!  As the attendance for the will reading dwindles, the tide turns and Erin takes out the attackers as well as conspiring brothers Crispian and Felix, who arranged the whole thing for the inheritance money.

The title of Adam Wingard's home invasion movie left expectations of a cheesy, derivative slasher flick.  But if you can look past one of the most convenient plot points ever, it's actually a well done film with a nice mix of tension, gore and even a few laughs.  Sharni Vinson's Erin is a heroine audiences can get behind.  You're Next was actually filmed in 2011 and premiered at the Toronto Film Festival later that year before a wide release in 2013.

The Strangers: Prey At Night (2018)

A family of four stop for the night at a deserted trailer park before disposing the troublesome daughter away at boarding school.  As it turns out, they're not the only inhabitants.  Three psychopaths in familiar masks do some disposing of their own.  After taking out the parental authorities, it's up to Luke and Kinsey to battle Dollface, Pin-Up Girl and The Man in the Mask for their lives.

The Strangers: Prey At Night is a textbook example of movie development hell.  The sequel to The Strangers was first announced a mere three months after the first film... in 2008!  After several projected start dates, filming finally commenced in 2017, with the sequel's release date being ten years after the first film.  The movie was no stranger ;-) to harsh critics, but The Strangers: Prey At Night exceeded my expectations for a sequel, especially one that took so long to hit cinemas.  The swimming pool scene is the most notable for me.  And any use of 80s tunes for the soundtrack is totally radical in my book.
