A young Tommy Jarvis finally put an end to Jason Voorhees' reign of terror in Friday The 13th - The Final Chapter (1984). But the memories still haunt him as a teenager so Tommy's hauled off to Pinehurst Halfway House for treatment. There he meets an eclectic group of troubled teens under the care of Dr. Matt Letter and his assistant Pam Roberts. After Joey Burns is hacked to pieces by fellow patient Vic Faden, a string of murders take place in the area. With Vic in prison, it is soon wondered if Jason Voorhees is back from the dead. After almost all the patients and staff have been decimated, Pam and Tommy have a showdown with Jason in the barn, who is revealed to be paramedic Roy Burns.
It was a new beginning indeed for the Friday the 13th franchise. I guess some points should be granted for trying something different, but I'm not sure the world was ready for a copycat Jason Voorhees. If Part 5 feels sleezier than previous installments, it may be because director Danny Steinmann lensed hardcore porn before taking a stab at a mainstream horror flick. The body count makes up for the lack of suspense and fans were still hungry for more slaughter as A New Beginning hit number one its first week of release. And they needn't worry - Jason would live on.
