Amen (1986-1991)

Earnest Frye is a deacon at Philly's First Community Church in addition to being a lawyer.  When he's not involved in some scheme, he's butting heads with Pastor Rueben Gregory.  Earnest's daughter Thelma sets her sights on the new pastor and they eventually tie the knot and have a baby.  The series dealt with its fair share of social issues without being too preachy ;-)

In the 1980s, NBC's Saturday Night Lineup was a powerhouse.  Early pioneers included Mama's Family (1983-1990)Diff'rent Strokes (1978-1986)The Facts of Life (1979-1988) and Gimme A Break! (1981-1987).  The latter half of the decade had a pretty consistent lineup of 227 (1985-1990), The Golden Girls (1985-1992)Empty Nest (1988-1995) and Amen, a vehicle for Sherman Hemsley, who was hot off his ten year run on The Jeffersons (1975-1985).  The show enjoyed a prime timeslot its first two seasons, comfortably nestled between The Golden Girls and Hunter.  Ratings began to falter over the remaining seasons when the series moved to the 8:30 timeslot.  Unfortunately prayers went unanswered in the spring of 1991 and NBC turned all the lights of heaven off ;-)
