Netflix continues to cash in ;-) with it's original programming. Ozark is a crime drama focusing on Marty Byrde and his family, who flee The Windy City and relocate to the Ozarks when a money laundering scheme goes awry. Marty encounters some backwoods bozos as he works on making a drug lord millions. Ozark ended up interesting me more than I thought. I'm glad I invested my time ;-) Jason Bateman and Laura Linney deliver solid performances so it came as no surprise that a second season was greenlit.

The North Dekalb Mall was also used in Fear Street 1994 (2021). This photo was taken when I visited locations in August 2021. A different entrance was used, but you get the idea...
The interiors were done at Gwinnett Place Mall at 2100 Pleasant Hill Road in Duluth. It's more commonly known among filming location fans as The Starcourt Mall from Stranger Things (2016-), which is most likely why a different mall was used for the exterior.

DeleteThe Byrde's/Buddy's house is directly adjacent to The Dermody House on Bailey Drive in Flowery Branch, GA. You can see the driveway just over Eugenia's shoulder as she puts out the for sale sign.

DeleteLangmoe trailer park is filmed at Chestnut Ridge Park on Lake Lanier. It is an abandoned park. They shoot a lot of scenes there including the church that was burnt.

It’s been so much fun reading through all the locations you’ve been to for all these different shows in GA! I’m a Georgia native and have lived in so many of these places that are now in these shows I watch. The Tortas Locas/Shell Gas station is right behind the apartments I lived in for over 10 years. Was our after school place to go get snacks. Stranger Things “Starcourt Mall” was my weekend hangout when I was growing up. Anyways, keep up the awesome work!

DeleteA scene involving something 'that burned / was burning' was filmed on McEver Road, between Gaines Ferry Road and Vista Glen Drive. (The site is a weed-strewn field which was cleared for construction that never took place.) At least one scene was filmed inside Moonie's BBQ. Other scenes were filmed inside the building across the street from Moonie's BBQ. The house across Bailey Drive from what we locally call the 'gray brick house on the corner' (the brick house which was used in the series) had filming that took place over a short period of time and I do not believe was repeated. Much of the equipment (porta potties, generators, etc.) are parked at the more modern home at 6802 Gaines Ferry Road during filming at the old Bailey House, which was inherited by the current owners of 6802 (so, yes, same address with two houses and a detached garage with apartment on the property. In fact, the same family owns pretty much ALL the local sites used, with the exception of the house across Bailey Drive from the 'gray brick house on the corner.')

DeleteBrian: The KC Police wall shield was in the Byrde Enterprises office space on 15 Technology Parkway. Assume that East Patrol sign visible when Ben leaves with Ruth is at a doorway there or possibly at Eagle Rock.

Blue Cat Productions will be filming from Tuesday, 10 November 2020 until Friday, 13 November 2020 at the previously used location at 6816 Gaines Ferry Road, Flowery Branch, GA (the older house of the two houses at 6802 Gaines Ferry Road.) Prep work will be from 9 November to 16 November 2020. There is also activity at the former campground, Chestnut Hill, located beside Cinnamon Cove @ 6500 Gaines Ferry Road. I am sure there will be additional dates added - Bateman still does not have a clue as to what he is doing so they come back, and come back, and come back. It takes them weeks to film one simple scene because he either can't get it to look right or wants to change it.

DeleteBrian: Marty, Bruce, Liz, Del and Del's body guard were all in Chicago for the filming of the Aqua Tower and proposed office rental site, so they may have used a Chicago industrial building for the execution site. In fact, as Marty pulls into the Hansons' lot, it appears that there is a grain silo behind the property, which would have probably not been found in the Atlanta area. It is doubtful that Blue Cat Productions would have incurred the expense to drag Bruce, Liz, Del, Del's bodyguard and the two Hansons to Atlanta for the interior scenes, which could have been actual onsite scenes in any office/garage in the Chicago area, when Liz and the Hansons do not appear again in the Series and Bruce only appears again in Episode 8.

DeleteI finally bit the bullet and spent the better part of a day on Google Earth and Google trying to locate the "Kentucky" horse farm by comparing those sites to the farm in the Episode on my phone. I looked at 189 locations and none matched. I read on a thread somewhere that the farm is a private estate and not available to the public. As Goggle Earth and Google are mostly tied to commercial enterprises this would appear to be so. I spent a lot of time in Kentucky horse country around Lexington and am familiar with the grooming (no pun intended) of such farms. Most of those I looked at were in the Atlanta area working commercial operations and not as carefully tended. Without any further leads to the actual location, I am going to put this search to bed for now. GOOD LUCK!

DeleteBrian: While I know that it is not Georgia driven, in my searches for all things Ozark I came across the exterior setup church for Santiago's Baptism in S3.E10. It is Inglesia Catolica Nuestro Senora da Lourdes in Creel, Chihuahua Mexico. Google Earth has great pix. The modest interior for the service could be a church anywhere.

DeleteBrian: I found a very rich location for many scenes. Chestnut Ridge Park, Chestnut Ridge Road Flowery Branch is an abandoned park that essentially served as a "back lot." The roads here are perfect for action scenes as there is no traffic about which to worry during filming. This location provided all the scenes of: the Langmore's trailers; the semi-built and the burned Mason's church; the scene where Mason was floating before church; the road where Marty was cut off by Jacob's men and where Wendy comes upon Marty's bike; the road where Marty's cartel abductors drove away and were followed by Ruth and Ben; the road where Cade was killed; the road where Wendy kills Marty in the dream scene; the road location where Ruth meets Tommy for the cash transfer; the exterior and interior scenes of the bathrooms where Marty accosts the Langmores and recovers his cash; the road where Jonah is grabbed by Darlene Snell; the road where Wendy locates Charlotte and her van and watches during the night; etc., etc. A great shooting environment as it is remote untraveled, and once setup with known camera angles and lighting, needs no breaking down between scenes until the shooting is completed.

ReplyDeleteBrian: The Chestnut Ridge Park "back lot" was also the site of the beach cove scene where Tommy brought out his pistol and were all arrested by the Sheriff's Deputies.
ReplyDeleteWhilst trying to find all things Ozark, I focused on Stone Mountain Lake. Missouri Belle is actually the Henry W. Grady a longtime lake cruise boat. Supposedly Ruth picked this up in "Girardeau", but the filming location was the lower level of REI Boathouse which is easily identified by the painting on the stanchions and the distinctive railings. When Ruth and Cade returned the Belle to "Bagnell" it was moored around the corner from the REI Boathouse in a mooring slip that usually held the semi-abandoned Scarlet O'Hara a side paddle wheeler. The lake is essentially landlocked. When Marty and Ben flee the Belle to escape Nelson, this takes place on another lake. Belle does not have any of the railings shown in S3.E9. Also, no motors over 10hp are allowed on Stone Mountain Lake so their motoring off in a high powered craft would not have been possible.
While not terribly important in the scheme of things, I have been trying to track down:
Harry's Funeral Home: I started to look at out of metro parlors, but did not have any luck. The building that was used in S2.E8 was very substantial and had as a component a "Community Room". This leads me to believe that the location was a prosperous church. The background shows the area as not being densely populated which indicates one of the suburban filming areas where they have worked with local authorities. I dare not try to search all Atlanta area churches! ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS?
Lakeside School: I have the same problem locating this school. Should be in the shooting area. ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS?
Sen. Mercers Lumber Yard S2.E1 24:11: There are numerous lumber yards in the greater Atlanta area. I cannot read the plastic wrapping of the saw mill. With it I could probably find the dealer. ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS?
Probably more to follow. Gotta beat Season 4 to the starting gate.

DeleteBrian: At the end of S.2.E10, Missouri Belle was moved to the lakefront at the parking lot left of the REI Boathouse for the awards ceremony. The elevation as to Belle and the stone retaining wall of the parking lot pinpoint the location. A temporary staircase over the wall down to the parking lot was fabricated for the scene.
ReplyDeleteThe show runner must have had this location and the Henry W. Grady in mind at the start of the Series. Season 2 was all about a casino and the producers and writers had to be sure that they had a "river front" location and a vessel that could be used as the casino boat before heading in that direction. Wes Hagan the location manager is a whizzzz!

DeleteBrian: I have to correct my July 23, 2021 post about the use of a power boat on the Stone Mountain Lake. The production did have permission to use a power boat of more than 10hp on the Lake. The scenes of Marty arriving at the Belle (S3.E1) and Marty and Ben fleeing Nelson and departing the Belle (S3.E9) were filmed on the lake at REI Boathouse. I believe but could not confirm that the scene in S2.E2 of Cade towing the Belle was a "yard boat" also given permission to operate on the lake. Sory. I got a bit ahead of my research.

DeleteBrian: I got some leads while checking out locations. "Amy's Roadside Stand" where Wendy and Ben stopped and where Ben tried to call Helen is on a highway outside Cedartown, GA, west of Atlanta. The building is identifiable but closed down behind a chain link fence. The several shots and scenes at the "Farmers' Market" where Jacob and Darlene had their stand was created on a back section of the parking lot at Best Friend Park 6224 Jimmy Carter Blvd, Norcross. This is conveniently just across the street from Eagle Rock Studios and is easy to set up and take down and out of the way of busy usage.
ReplyDeleteBefore I shuck this mortal coil, I would love to find that accursed horse farm. It looks as though much of the driving approach shots may have been done at the Snell house, which has extensive dark wood rail fences. This would only leave the paddocks and horse barn unidentified.
I hear the footsteps of Season 4 and would love to pin down the last open items from 1-3.

DeleteBrian: Whilst cleaning up some open Ozark location issues, I found "Hurn's Marina" where Ruth made a proposal to Hurn and then destroyed his docked boats as a subtle prod to do business with Byrde Enterpsises. It is located on Lake Altoona at Holiday Harbor Marina & Resort 5989 Groover's Landing Road SE, Acworth, GA. The tip off was the railroad bridge in the background. Some set design work was added to the current Google Earth depiction. Hurn's Marina sign and logo were produced by Joshua Minnich. Miles to go before January 22, 2022! I doubt that we will see anymore of this site as it appeared and disappeared in S2.E3 and doesn't fit with the casino emphasis in the plot arc.
