Joan Jett & The Blackhearts - I Love Rock 'n' Roll (1982)

After her stint with The Runaways, Philadelphia rocker Joan Jett pursued a solo career and recorded a few songs, including a cover of The Arrows' I Love Rock 'n' Roll.  After forming The Blackhearts, the song was revisited and became their debut single.  I Love Rock 'n' Roll spent seven weeks at #1 and has featured on several 80s compilation CDs ever since.  The song set the bar high and subsequent singles failed to match the success of their declaration of music.

The video was filmed at a club called Privates on Manhattan's Upper East Side, which today is a  ubiquitous Starbucks.  It mostly features the band performing the song with a few shots of Joan's imminent conquest for the night.  The only telltale sign that remains is the shot at the end when Joan looks back inside.  The buildings across the street are still recognizable, even with my longstanding curse of visiting NYC locations covered in scaffolding.

  1. Privates was a multi level club, the video was shot in the basement.
