Tootsie (1982)

Michael Dorsey is a talented yet difficult to work with New York actor.  Desperate for work after a long dry spell, he dons a wig and a dress and auditions as Dorothy Michaels for the soap opera Southwest General.  The deception kicks into high gear after Michael lands the part, becomes a fan favorite and keeps male admirers at bay as he becomes enamored with his female co-star Julie.  All is revealed during a live taping.  Julie eventually forgives him and they walk off down the street to happily ever after.

Tootsie was a commercial and critical smash.  If it wasn't for E.T. (1982), it would've been the highest grossing film of 1982.  Critics lauded the blend of comedy, tenderness and absurdity.  The film was nominated for 9 Academy Awards, with Jessica Lagne being the sole winner.  Stephen Bishop's It Might Be You is the quintessential early 80s soft pop song.  The 90s would get its own version of Tootsie when Robin Williams transformed into Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)
