Sixteen Candles (1984)

John Hughes first delved into the world of teen angst with Sixteen Candles. It's Samantha Baker's birthday, but her family is so preoccupied with her older sister's wedding they completely forget about it.  To boot, a geek is in love with her, but she's got her eyes on Jake, the big man on campus.  After a series of awkward moments with her grandparents and The Donger, it looks like Samantha's life couldn't get any worse.  But in the end, Jake makes it a very Sweet 16 for her.  The film catapulted Molly Ringwald to stardom and she became the go-to girl for 80s teen movies.  She would go on to grace the cover of Time magazine - a nice consolation prize for being written off The Facts of Life (1979-1988).
