Good Ol' Boys Bo and Luke Duke are on probation in Hazzard Country, GA for illegally transporting moonshine. They spend their days cruising around in their Dodge Charger, better known as The General Lee, trying to clear their name and foil the crooked shenanigans of county commissioner Boss Hogg. Season 5 saw the introduction of Coy and Vance Duke, poorly received and watered down versions of their cousins.
The Dukes of Hazzard was a ratings success its first four years. Contract and merchandising disputes lead Tom Wopat and John Schneider to protest the show in season 5. Producers scrambled and applied a band aid by hiring Christopher Mayer and Byron Cherry to portray their younger cousins, which saw a steep decline in viewers. Wopat and Schneider eventually returned before the end of the fifth season, but ratings still plummeted.
The series was narrated by Waylon Jennings, who wrote and sang the show's theme song "Good Ol' Boys," which hit #21 on the Billboard Hot 100. Over 300 Dodge Chargers were used for The General Lee over the seven seasons of the show. The short shorts worn by Catherine Bach, who played Bo and Luke's cousin Daisy, became known as Daisy Dukes. The first five episodes were shot on location outside of Atlanta, GA before moving to the Warner Brothers Backlot in Burbank, CA.
