Play Misty For Me (1971)

A simple request turns into a deadly nightmare for Carmel disc jockey Dave Garver.  After a tryst with #1 fan Evelyn Draper, who calls into his show frequently to request the jazz standard "Misty," Dave's life spins ;-) out of control when he finds himself to be Evelyn's obsession.  Dave's rekindled romance, Tobie, his maid Birdie and Sgt. McCallum all feel Evelyn's wrath before a final showdown between her and Dave where their relationship really hits the rocks ;-)

Play Misty For Me was Clint Eastwood's directorial debut.  Originally taking place in LA, Clint switched the setting to his hometown of Carmel, which provided some breathtaking locales.  The film was a critical and commercial success with Jessica Walter delivering a spectacular performance.  The film was unofficially remade as Fatal Attraction (1987) the following decade.

Play Misty For Me was filmed in Carmel, Carmel Highlands and Monterey, CA

Location: Dave's House
Address: 162 Spindrift Road, Carmel Highlands, CA

Location: Dave's Neighbor's House
Address: 2384 Bay View Avenue, Carmel, CA

I originally had the wrong location for this house.  Thanks to Whimsey for the correction...

Tobie's House is rumored to be on Spindrift Road as well.  Judging from stone walls it might be 172 or 174 Spindriftt Road...

Location: The Radio Station
Address: 26135 Carmel Rancho Boulevard, Carmel, CA

The Carmel Rancho Shopping Center

Location: The Sardine Factory Bar & Restaurant
Address:  701 Wave Street, Monterey, CA

Location: Dave Cruises Main Street
Address: Ocean Avenue & Lincoln Street, Carmel, CA

Location: Dave Follows "Tobie"
Address: Ocean Avenue & Monte Verde Street, Carmel, CA

This location was not previously known but luckily Carmel's main drag is not that long so it was pretty easy to track down on google maps. Dave parks across the street from where The Cottage of Sweets is located today before hopping out...

Anjelica is such a blabbermouth...

Location: The Wharf Restaurant
Address: Wharf II, Monterey, CA

The restaurant is now entirely enclosed...

She had spunk and looked good for her age.  I think Madge Brenner COULD get laid at a lumber camp...

Location: Dave & Tobie's Beach
Address: Carmel Beach, Carmel, CA

Location: Dave & Tobie Climb Rocks
Address: near 26226 Scenic Road, Carmel, CA

I can see why they call it Scenic Road...

Wow, so, so much of it was REAL and not a movie set!

  2. Actually, 162 just sold for over $8 million, but that was Toby's house not Dave's.

    1. A few real estate websites had listed 162 as being Clint's house in the movie. Plus the neighbor's house across the street matches up.

    2. You are right. 162 Spindrift Road, was Tobie's(Donna Mills) house, not Clint's.

    1. Sorry for the late reply, your comment went to spam initially. Thanks for the correction on the neighbors house. It appears that two houses were used for Dave's house. The one at 2377 Bay View Avenue which shows the garage and 162 Spindrift seen at the beginning of the movie.

    2. No, the house at the beginning of the movie is the same house at the end of the movie (Tobie's house). - 162 Spindrift Rd, Carmel Highlands, CA 93923. Clint even mentions Tobie's house address in the movie at 1:27:06 as Spindrift Road. The only filming location used for Clint's (Dave) house was - 2377 Bay View Ave, Carmel, CA 93923

    3. I've always interpreted the house at the beginning to be Dave's and the one at the end as Tobie and "Annabells". I know he mentions Spindrift but not an actual address, just 4th or 5th house. I guess what threw me is they must have used two different entrances to the house then. When Clint leaves to head into the radio station, there's no stone wall and the entry fence doesn't match the one the detective pulls up to at the end. Plus the road doesn't bend so soon after Clint pulls out at the beginning like it does when the detective pulls up at the end.

  5. Awesome then and now photos, now I want to watch the movie again! I saw it as a young child and it creeped me out! Loved Clint,s house with the walk through courtyard. Thanks for a great article!

  7. Thanks so much for this! I was very surprised to find this. My husband and I loved this film for many reasons including the Carmel/Monterey settings. Any idea where the love scene in the wooded, waterfall & pool was filmed? We'd love to go there - it is otherworldly gorgeous. Thinking that it might be in a restricted area??? Thanks!

    1. You're welcome! I'm not sure about the waterfall, though I would love to know where it is.

  8. I love your comment about Madge Brenner - she could get laid in a lumber camp! Look her up on IMDB - her name was Irene Hervey and she was gorgeous. She was the mother of pop singer Jack Jones - himself quite a looker.

    1. :-) Yes, she was a very attractive woman. This is the only movie I've ever seen her in but she was great in just that one scene.
