Good Morning, Miss Bliss (1988-1989)

Disney child star Hayley Mills lands her own sitcom as a middle school teacher in Indianapolis. If it sounds like Must Flee TV, then you're not alone. NBC passed on the 1987 pilot, which originally co-starred future Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990-2000) star Brian Austin Greene, future Family Matters (1989-1998) star Jaleel White and future SeaQuest DSV star Jonathan Brandis.

The show found a home on The Disney Channel the following year, with the peacock network producing the show.  All the kids were re-cast and new characters Zack Morris, Samuel "Screech" Powers and Lisa Turtle were introduced among others while Mr. Belding ruled the roost.  The cast changes didn't help much and Good Morning, Miss Bliss was canceled after 13 episodes.  But NBC wasn't done with this show yet, reclaiming the rights and retooling it into the pop culture phenomenon known today as Saved By The Bell (1989-1993).

Saved By The Bell: Hawaiian Style (1992)

The Bayside Six trade in Malibu sand for the beaches of Waikiki in Saved By The Bell: Hawaiian Style.  They crash at Kelly's grandfather's Hawaiian Hideaway, which is having  a Bates Motel-ish vacancy issue and is looking to be bought out.  The gang unexpectedly runs into Mr. Belding, who leads an ill-fated tour group around Oahu.  Hilarity ensues as Zack attacks the unscrupulous land developers with another one of his master plans all the while contemplating life with a single mother.

I didn't catch Saved By The Bell: Hawaiian Style when it originally aired, which is odd since it was around the time of my peak obsession for Saved By The Bell (1989-1993).  I only watched it for the first time a few months ago.  Screech's preposterous Hawaiian Idol subplot and Lisa being reduced to an under-five aside, the television movie is a high-octane ride with a twist rivaling Halloween II (1981).  I mean did anyone think that Brian was working with Mr. Worthington all along?  Filming in Hawaii probably lasted all of two days, but it's sprinkled in throughout to remind us where the movie is supposed to take place.  And in grand tradition of Zack's love interest, Andrea, joins a bevy of beauties never to be seen again since no luck be a lady with Preppy.  That wouldn't happen 'til Vegas.

Saved By The Bell: Hawaiian Style was filmed in Honolulu, HI and Laguna Beach, Calabasas, Santa Monica and Los Angeles, CA

This was also where John McClane collects his luggage in Die Hard (1988).

We're left to guess which hotel it is since the camera never zooms in on one. My guess is the one of the left, which is The Waikiki Beach Marriott...

Just beyond the hotel is the establishing shot of The Hawaiian Hideaway, which was actually located in Laguna Beach, CA...

These are not exactly match shots since I originally visited this hotel because it was seen during the third season of Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990-2000) for Brenda & Co.'s spa weekend getaway.  Would these two shows ever stop copying each other's filming locations?  What would Mr. Testaverde say?

This unique shopping bazaar was recently turned into a high-end retail complex.  All that remains is an old banyan tree...

The Karate Kid Part II (1986)

The Karate Kid (1984) was an incredible underdog story that won the hearts of viewers and critics.  Two years later, Mr. Miyagi and Danielsan are back, this time traveling to Okinawa to visit Miyagi's dying father.  They both find themselves at odds with the evil Sato and his nephew Chozen.   Since Ali said sayonara ;-), Daniel mends his broken heart with the sweet and soft-spoken Kumiko.  While Miyagi and Sato make amends, Danielsan and Chozen are left to fight to the death during a dance festival.

The Karate Kid Part II was released on my birthday while my family was vacationing in Hawaii.  I remember my grandfather took me and my cousins to see it.  We got "baby rattle" pellet drums afterwards at a shop on our way back to the hotel.  Little did I know the movie was filmed about a half an hour north of Waikiki.  It was a worthy sequel with great performances, beautiful scenery and an incredible soundtrack.  Peter Cetera delivers 80's pop perfection with the Academy Award-nominated Glory of Love while New Edition offers a fantastic cover of Earth Angel (1986).  With the recent success of Cobra Kai (2018-), hopefully Chozen will zipline in at some point.

The Karate Kid Part II was filmed in Kaneohe, HI and Northridge, Burbank and Los Angeles, CA

Location: All Valley Karate Championship
Address: 18111 Nordhoff Street, Northridge, CA

The opening scene, which was filmed at the Cal State Northridge's Matadome, was originally intended to be the ending of the first film...

Location: Tomi Village

There wasn't too much information about the filming locations, but thanks to an online article, it was mentioned that Mr. Miyagi's village was filmed in Kaneohe in an undeveloped area where a 7-11 now stands...

It was a bit tricky getting a shot of the bend of palm trees as this is now on private property.  I did sneak in a few shots before I was chased away...

Location: Mr. Miyagi's Father's House
Address: 49-560 Kamehameha Highway, Kaneohe, HI

On the Kuala Movie Ranch Tour, our guide informed us that Mr. Miyagi's father's house is located there, much to my surprise...

Location: King Shohashi Castle
Address: between Lania Lookout & Halona Blowhole, Honolulu, HI

Daniel and Kumiko spot the matte painting somewhere between the Lanai Lookout and the Halona Blowhole.  This is not the exact the spot, but it gives you an idea...

Location: The Electronics Store
Address: Warner Brothers Studios - Hennessy Street, Burbank, CA

This is not an exact match up since, at the time, I didn't know it was used in the film.  I was getting a shot of the stairs from Gremlins (1984)...

Location: Sato's Dojo
Address: Warner Brothers Studios - Hennessy Street, Burbank, CA

The bar was also located on Hennessy Street.  Action fans may recognize Theo from Die Hard (1988) as a G.I. breaking some ice and horror fans may recognize Andy from Friday the 13th Part III (1982) as a G.I. collecting the bets.  The sock hop was located somewhere on Hennessy Street as well.
